Faceplate turning
From WikiWOOD
In faceplate turning, the wood is mounted on the lathe with the grain at right angles to the axis of the lathe.
Faceplate turning techniques can be used to make bowls, plates and similar items. It gets its name because traditionally the work was attached to lathe with a faceplate, but the workpiece can be held in many ways such as a woodturning chuck or vacuum chuck.
Tools used in faceplate turning include bowl gouges and scrapers.
