History

The AAW was started in April, 1985. The Journal was started, and the first local chapter was founded later that year. The first annual symposium was held in October, 1986.

Local Chapters

The best way to find a woodturning club near you is to visit the list of local chapters, on the American Association of Woodturner's website: http://www.woodturner.org/community/chapters/LocalChapters.asp

The list has meeting dates, times and places. A contact name, usually with e-mail and if the club has a website, that is linked.

National Turning Symposium

The AAW Board sponsors an annual symposium. This event attracts woodturners not only from across the US, but also from around the world. There is a Trade Show with booths sponsored by various suppliers and manufacturers. There is an Instant Gallery, where attendees can enter any turned item. The educational component is a series of classes demonstrated by prominent turners. Many of the topics are presented multiple times during the symposium, allowing many turners a wide range of demonstrations.

Regional Symposia

Many areas of the United States have experienced a group of local AAW Chapters band together for some educational purposes. These groups sponsor a regional symposium, modeled after the AAW National Symposium.

SWAT - South West Association of Turners.[1] SWATurners is a organization of 22 Texas and Oklahoma chapters of the American Association of Woodturners and sponsors of an annual woodturning symposium the aim of which is to provide a live forum and venue for the education and skill development of those interested in woodturning. This symposium is usually held in October.

Desert Woodturning Roundup - This group of AAW Local Chapters is organized as the Arizona Woodturners Association. This symposium is usually held in February.[2]

The Ohio Valley Woodturners Guild - This local AAW Chapter sponsors a Biennial Symposium, usually held in the fall. Ohio Valley encompasses turners from the areas of southeastern Indiana, northern Kentucky, and southwestern Ohio.[3]
