Personal Information

I have been turning wood for 4 years. I live in Kansas, USA. Woodturning is a hobby interest for me. Among my hobbies are reading, US History, and photography. I am employed as a Health Care Administrator; married, my wife teaches Special Math at the Elementary Level, with one adult daughter, she works as on a Cardiac Intensive Care Unit with her R.N.

I got started with a ca. 1936 Walker Turner lathe, added into a purchase of walnut. In 2006 I added my dream lathe, a Powermatic 3520b. I turn bowls, and bowls and some other items. Everyone told me not to worry about wood, now I have 3+ big trees waiting on my hobby turning time to turn.

Work on Tool Pages for Turning Tools

Learning about formatting Wiki style

Intricacies of software settings and how the insides of the Wiki work for a non-sysop type.

Templates and Subpage Possibilities. The Template Help is some good stuff, just takes a while to get the details into my head.

I'm pondering the need for an article to terminology. In the US, turners want to turn a tenon to chuck onto. In the UK it is a spigot that is turned. We also have catch -- dig-in; pillar drill -- drill press; and others. Perhaps this is not a long enough list to warrant an article?

My Journey

I started with the Wiki process January 17, 2009. I thought I would put a few notes here from time to time about what I am learning about the Wiki Community. --JN 07:34, 22 January 2009 (CST)

First Reaction was this is somewhat easy. I picked History of Woodturning and started the article. Came back to it a couple of times and finally put up an image of a pole lathe. Some of the wiki stuff I picked up was from looking at pages and checking the edit boxes. I did stop hitting the save button when I am just looking - I found the cancel link and thus do not save a page in all the revision stuff with no changes.

I next found a couple of buttons on the Tool Bar of all the Edit Boxes.

  • I like the Ab (3rd from left) It will format my internal links; type the page name highlight and click or click and then type in the page name.
  • The A (5th from left) inserts a Level 2 Headline. Use them for Section Headers. When you get 4 on a page, the wiki will place a contents box and links to the sections at the top of the page.
  • The Signature Button (2nd from Right) is also handy for leaving your sig and timestamp on a talk page.

I now know that a colon to start the line will indent and the convention is to indent responses to items on talk pages. 2 colons indent another stop etc.

I also figured out that every page has a talk page. Most viewers will only see the page, one can use the Discuss This Page link in the sidebar to access a talk page. Contributors and editors can discuss and coordinate their collaboration on the talk page. --stnick 07:46, 22 January 2009 (CST)

I am also learning my way around. Recent Changes and the various links on the Side Bar are handy. Placing book marks (internal links) on my page and other items. I feel comfortable with the expanding layout of my page and my talk page. --stnick 20:54, 22 January 2009 (CST)

As usual, I always jump in and work on inventing the wheel all over again. After some fun with formatting images, Toolrest points out the wonderful Help Pages. --stnick 07:25, 23 January 2009 (CST)

Put my collection of posts on Preparing Green Wood, on the page. I even added one image for the page. The maple is from Kenny's tree. --stnick 00:05, 25 January 2009 (CST)

OK!! The End of Week One!! Let's see how it goes from here. --stnick 15:47, 25 January 2009 (CST)

Ok! This week, I've been working on bringing over a template from MediaWiki for an Info Box on Prominent Turners. I got the code in what I think is the right place and finally figured out the documentation goes on a sub page and then how to create a subpage. Found that a link on the bottom of the template page creates the subpage. So I got that in. And I got an infobox for prominent turners going in my sand box. Now, I get to read the comments and figure out how to change the paramenters to take the writer info box from MediaWiki and apply it to turners. --stnick 23:14, 28 January 2009 (CST)

The reading about subpages starts a whole new line of thinking about expanding the Wiki. --stnick 23:16, 28 January 2009 (CST)

Moved the Infobox template to a subpage of my talk page. Worked on changing parameters of the template and documentation. Involved project!

Questions galore - will post next session. Primarily about what appear to be sub templates. --stnick 23:46, 29 January 2009 (CST)

OK! The End of Week Three! Spent a little time with the templates. Life got busy, so I did small stuff here. Uploading some pictures etc. Also got to turn and thus take the pictures. --stnick 07:27, 9 February 2009 (CST)
