Bowl gouge article

Hi John, your article Bowl gouge is coming on nicely. Thanks for all your other contributions too. It looked like you were having trouble with the layout of the photos, so I hope you don't mind me butting in. I moved them into a gallery tag, but that is just one option. You can also put them alongside text, by adding the image tag at the start of the text, so it could have looked like I did here. -- Toolrest 05:52, 22 January 2009 (CST)

Thanks - See the response on your talk page. JN
Hi John. No need to put your response on my talk page. I will find it here in my watchlist. Toolrest 07:42, 22 January 2009 (CST)
John, I don't see your response here or on my talk page? Toolrest 09:03, 22 January 2009 (CST)
Derek, Evidently I did not save what I wrote so I will retype and save. I liked your help. Please feel free to jump in with any of the stuff I'm doing, or leave a note on the talk page for that page. I have also learned to check the revision list. I looked around for the syntax to do something along those lines and had not found it. I think the version on the page will work better. The next thing I want to do is put up a few more images of bowl gouge grinds. Longer and shorter. I think the need some illustration and some additional discussion. Irish, Long, Fingernail, Ellsworth etc etc.
If a user adds 8 images to that tag will it result in two rows, foul up everything or 8 pictures across? --stnick 20:48, 22 January 2009 (CST)
It will create two rows. There is an example at Help:Images. Toolrest 05:04, 23 January 2009 (CST)

John, I have added a lot of material to Help:Templates in an attempt to make it easier for users to create templates. I would appreciate your comments. --Toolrest 17:46, 6 February 2009 (CST)

Terminology

On your user page I spotted the following and thought I should comment: I'm pondering the need for an article to terminology. In the US, turners want to turn a tenon to chuck onto. In the UK it is a spigot that is turned. We also have catch -- dig-in; pillar drill -- drill press; and others. Perhaps this is not a long enough list to warrant an article?

I don't think short articles are a problem. But like the glossary, I don't think it is the most useful way to present information in a wiki. Much better I think to have an article for each term and use redirects where appropriate. For example, the main article 'pillar drill' should mention in the lead that it is also called a 'drill press (UK)'. The article 'drill press' is a simple redirect to 'pillar drill'. Now, when someone searches for either term they end up straight away at the most useful page. If it is done in a glossary or any other list, then that page will just be one of potentially several others that will be returned in the search results.

As for tenon and spigot, that could be a can of worms. I think a lot of words like this have become very misused over time and they are now quite confusing. A spigot chuck/jaws are quite deep. Tenon as in joinery is also quite long to be effective. The 'tenon' I use tend to be short, and depending on the jaws I use, may incorporate a dovetail. So I can see some problems ahead with this one, but something we will have to overcome. --Toolrest 06:43, 10 February 2009 (CST)

File copyright problem, Image:BGFluteShapes.jpg

Thank you for uploading Image:BGFluteShapes.jpg. We have to be very careful about files we use because of copyright law. We need you to specify two things on the file description page:

  • The copyright holder, and
  • The copyright status

The copyright holder is usually the creator, or sometimes their employer. If you created this image, then you are the copyright holder. If several people collaborated, then there may be more than one copyright holder.

We need to place Template:Copyright-status on the file description page and fill in the appropriate parameters. See the template page for instructions, but if you have questions, please leave a note here and I will reply as soon as I can.

The same may apply to other files you have uploaded.

Thanks, — Derek 08:41, 13 February 2009 (CST)

Status Update

Things at my day job, increased exponentially since the first part of February with the hospitalization of two key employees and some other annual type recurring events, CPA Audits, etc. I will become more active as the lengthy days at work subside. There will be more information available this weekend. --stnick 06:51, 25 February 2009 (CST)

Good to here from you John, glad all is well, and look forward to having you back. I've been sidetracked with wikipedia the last 24, and really ought to be spending more time at my real job anyway. --Derek 09:09, 25 February 2009 (CST)
OK! Some of the items at work have eased. I've got my key employees back to work. Tax time has picked up here in the US. I may pick up my activity during the next month compared to the last one. Certainly after May 1. --stnick 23:31, 19 March 2009 (CDT)
