Safety templates
Needed for How-to articles etc. Needs to look different from maintenance templates. Should link to a safety article, but advise readers to take responsibility for their own actions. Toolrest 06:36, 3 March 2008 (EST)
- Template:Stopandread is this what your thinking about.
- It's great, thanks. It will do nicely for highlighting specific hazards, see Cutting logs for bowl turning. I took the liberty of centering the template to see how it looks. I also deleted extra empty lines under the template. It's easy to add them on the page; not having an empty line on the edit page makes it hard to read. Revert if you don't like it.
- However, I was thinking of something more generic, just to cover admin and editors. Here is an example that apparently comes from Fine Woodworking: "Woodworking is inherently dangerous... Don't try to perform operations you learn about here until you're certain that they are safe for you and your shop situation." Toolrest 06:36, 3 March 2008 (EST)
- Ok, I follow you now. We can take out the hardwired text Please read carefully or we can change it to something like Stop! Think Safety! or Important safety considerations. WikiSysop 08:52, 3 March 2008 (EST)
- and I think perhaps you also intended the Please read carefully text to link to a generic safety article. WikiSysop 08:55, 3 March 2008 (EST)
- Stopandread is good as it is for specific problem areas (ie chainsaws, tablesaws etc). But maybe we need another that will be mandatory for all 'how to' pages just as a means to absolve writers from responsibility for the actions of others. Toolrest 10:21, 3 March 2008 (EST)
- I'll make another called Template:Safteyfirst that won't have variables and say something like Please be responsible for your own safety. The articles found here may or may not cover all related safety considerations. Variables such as individual skill, condition of equipment and environmental conditions should always be considered. Always consult your equipment owners manuals and follow basic safety principals before attempting any of the techniques discussed here at WikiWOOD. ? WikiSysop 07:37, 4 March 2008 (EST)
- That sounds ideal. Thank you!
Upload copyright
I have completed the template {{Copyright-status}} which is my best stab at what needs to go on all image pages. I have updated Image:Quercus_robur_crosssection.jpg and Image:Teknatool.jpg to include it. I would like comments on this. Does it do what we need? Is it easy enough to use and the documentation clear enough?
Joel, can I / you update the Upload File page to include this, either as an instruction, or embed the basic syntax into the file description window? Toolrest 10:51, 21 January 2009 (CST)
- If we can not include it, can we place the code below the edit window. That way it would be an easy cut and paste, with a constant reminder to include an answer to the copyright issue on each upload. --stnick 22:07, 10 February 2009 (CST)
Extensions that need installing
- wikimedia:Extension:Cite/Cite.php This enables links to footnotes, references etc.
- On it, I'll let you know when complete. Zunigene 13:12, 10 February 2009 (CST)
- AutoWikiBrowser looks like a handy tool for making repetitive changes to multiple pages,[1] such as making template documentation consistent etc. It needs a few thing setting up on the wiki first, "You are also able to use AWB with third-party wikis, if you go to the General menu and select "User and project preferences", you can change the wiki there. The wiki must support the Bot API required by AWB. This means that it should have latest HEAD version of MediaWiki or something close to that."[2] My question is how much hassle is it likely to be getting this to work here? --Derek 10:02, 1 March 2009 (CST)
Progress towards going public
Joel has just told me that he has been upgrading the software on this main site and is nearly done.
I am currently working on bringing ALL the templates up to scratch, most particularly trying to standardise documentation (much of which is missing anyway), and the way they are categorised (many aren't) etc. There are lots of little intricacies, and I am learning a lot. I think that if they can all be brought in line with one another, it will be much clearer for others to understand and be able to build their own templates without it all turning into a mess again. I have marked some for deletion, where they don't seem to be used, rather than waste time upgrading them. We can always take them from mediawiki or wherever if we need them later.--Toolrest 12:43, 10 February 2009 (CST)
- The templates are a mess, but I am making progress. I now have permissions to delete files, and have been going through all the template namespace, deleting those that are not used, not documented and I can see no immediate use for. We can always get them back if they are needed at a later date, but for now it is easier to understand what is going on without the clutter. If I have made a mistake and deleted a template which breaks something, let me know and I will fix it.
- I have also deleted a lot of dead articles in the main namespace which were flagged for deletion.
- I have made some changes to the sidebar menu, most noticeably change Categories to Contents, and moved it up to the number 2 position. I deleted current events,it can always be put back if and when we ever decide to do something with it.--Derek 06:38, 14 February 2009 (CST)
- So far it is looking great! I am going to do a backup and do another incremental upgrade this weekend. Zunigene 19:56, 16 February 2009 (CST)
- I just added some information to Help:Formatting. Things like
strikeoutare handy on to-do lists. I have also done more on Help:Templates, particularly how to document templates, and I got the /doc preload working to my satisfaction. If anyone wants to try making and documenting a template to test drive the Help instructions and the preload, that would be good. Feedback appreciated. The pages that document the templates that document templates got a little confusing, but I got there in the end. I also made a couple of templates that we can use to promote the communities and portal pages. There should be a couple floating around here somewhere. Is the last upgrade you are planning, or are there more? --Derek 08:41, 19 February 2009 (CST)
